NORMI Launches Medical Advisory Board to Better Serve Mold-Sensitive Individuals

NORMI has launched a new Medical Advisory Board to better connect mold remediation with cutting-edge medical insight for mold-sensitive individuals. In this article we explain what the board does, why it matters (especially for mold-sensitive individuals), and how it supports DeconTech clients.

NORMI Launches Medical Advisory Board to Better Serve Mold-Sensitive Individuals

What this means for people affected by mold—and for DeconTech clients.

The mold and indoor air quality world just took an important step forward.

The National Organization of Remediators and Microbial Inspectors (NORMI™) has announced the creation of a new Medical Advisory Board, led by mold-related illness expert Dr. Andrew Heyman. This move is a big deal for anyone dealing with chronic symptoms from mold exposure, and for the professionals who are trying to fix the buildings making them sick.

Bringing Medical and Remediation Worlds Together

For years, many doctors have been treating patients for environmental illnesses—while those same patients continue living or working in contaminated buildings. NORMI’s new Medical Advisory Board is designed to help break that cycle by creating a stronger bridge between:

  • Medical providers who understand conditions like Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS) and other mold-related illnesses

  • Inspectors and remediators who work directly on the homes, workplaces, and buildings causing those symptoms

The Board is chaired by Dr. Andrew Heyman, Medical Director of Integrative Medicine at The George Washington University, and includes:

  • Clinical pharmacists Jim LaValle (LaValle Metabolix) and Ray Solano

  • Dr. Ross, Director of the Virginia Institute of Neuropsychiatry

  • Physician Assistant Allison Remy

Together, this team brings deep expertise in environmental medicine, pharmacology, and complex chronic illness.

A Focus on Sensitized and Mold-Injured Individuals

One of the Board’s first major actions has been to review and endorse NORMI’s Level Four Protocol—a specialized remediation approach designed specifically for people who are highly sensitive to environmental toxins, including mold and mycotoxins.

This protocol is the foundation of NORMI’s Certified Remediation for Sensitized Individuals (NCRSI™) credential. Professionals who earn this certification are trained to:

  • Work with clients who have CIRS and similar conditions

  • Follow more detailed and protective remediation steps

  • Coordinate more effectively with medical providers treating these patients

Importantly, the Level Four Protocol is built to align with the industry’s core IICRC S-520 Standard of Care, so it fits within recognized best practices while going further to protect those who are especially vulnerable.

Why This Matters if You’re Mold-Sensitive

If you’re dealing with mold-related illness—or you suspect your home or workplace is affecting your health—this announcement is encouraging for several reasons:

  • More medically informed remediation. Training and protocols are being updated with direct input from experts who treat mold-injured patients every day.

  • Better outcomes. When remediation work is guided by both building science and medical insight, there’s a better chance the environment will truly support healing.

  • Easier to find qualified help. NORMI is connecting patients and healthcare providers with properly trained remediators through its NORMI Pro Locator, so people aren’t left guessing who to hire.

As NORMI’s Executive Director Doug Hoffman often says, “We fix buildings, not people.” By partnering closely with medical professionals, NORMI is helping ensure that both pieces of the puzzle—healthcare and environmental cleanup—are finally working together.

What This Means for DeconTech Clients

At DeconTech Mold Inspection Services, we’re committed to science-based, medically informed environmental assessments. That’s why we follow NORMI standards and prioritize ongoing training tied to the latest protocols—especially those designed for sensitized individuals.

This development from NORMI means:

  • The professionals we align with for remediation have access to even better, medically vetted guidelines.

  • Our clients who are working with mold-literate doctors can benefit from stronger collaboration between the inspection, remediation, and medical sides of their case.

  • The industry as a whole is moving closer to what we believe in: a truly integrated approach to mold and biotoxin exposure.

Looking Ahead

The creation of the NORMI Medical Advisory Board is more than an internal update to an industry organization—it’s a sign that mold-related illness is being taken more seriously, and that standards are evolving to protect the people who need it most.

We’ll be following these developments closely and continuing to align our inspection practices with the best available science and medical guidance.

If you’re dealing with mold concerns—or you’ve been diagnosed with a mold-related condition and need an inspection that takes your health seriously—DeconTech is here to help you navigate the process with clarity, care, and evidence-based guidance.
